What is a priority fee on Solana?

Short answer

A priority fee is extra SOL you attach to a transaction to bid for faster inclusion when the network is busy, paid on top of the tiny base fee. It is set in micro-lamports per compute unit, and many wallets offer "fast/turbo" presets.

Priority fees spike hard during the exact viral launches you want to trade. Too low and your transaction lags or fails; too high and you overpay on every trade.

Why would my sell get stuck?

During congestion, an under-priced sell can sit unconfirmed while the price drops. A higher priority fee helps your transaction land sooner.

Is the priority fee the same as slippage?

No. Priority fee buys you speed (inclusion); slippage tolerance sets the price movement you accept. They are separate settings.

How high should priority fees be?

Enough to land reliably given current congestion. Keep a sane buffer, especially for exits, but avoid massively overpaying on calm markets.
