How to avoid memecoin rug pulls
Rug pulls are the most common way to lose money on memecoins. The good news: most rugs share the same handful of setups, and you can screen for them in under a minute before you ever click buy.
Why this matters
If you only learn one defensive skill, make it this. A fast pre-buy rug screen filters out the majority of obvious scams and saves you from the single biggest source of avoidable losses.
Step by step
- Check liquidity status first. Confirm the LP is locked or burned, not held unlocked in the dev wallet. Unlocked dev-held liquidity can be pulled in one transaction — that is the rug. Verify on-chain via the locker or burn address, not a screenshot.
- Verify mint and freeze authority. On an explorer like Solscan, confirm mint authority is renounced (supply cannot be inflated) and freeze authority is renounced (your account cannot be frozen to block selling). Live authorities are immediate red flags.
- Inspect holder concentration. Look at the top holders, excluding the LP and burn wallets. A single non-LP wallet holding 15–20%+ — or several wallets funded by the same address — means concentrated supply that can dump on you.
- Trace the dev wallet. Find what the deployer holds and where it got its SOL. A deployer linked to past rugs, or one quietly accumulating across funded sister wallets, is a hard pass.
- Confirm others can sell. Check the transaction history for successful sells from ordinary wallets. If only the deployer ever sells, suspect a honeypot or a near-100% sell tax.
- Size for total loss. Even after a clean screen, treat every memecoin as if it can go to zero. Position sizing is your last line of defense when the checks miss something novel.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Trusting a "liquidity locked ✓" badge without checking the unlock date and amount.
- Assuming renounced mint authority alone means safe (freeze and LP still matter).
- Reading top holders without excluding the LP/burn wallets and misjudging concentration.
- Ignoring funded sister wallets that hide true dev concentration.
- Letting a green chart override a failed safety check.
Quick checklist
- ☐ LP locked or burned (verified on-chain)
- ☐ Mint authority renounced
- ☐ Freeze authority renounced
- ☐ No single non-LP wallet with outsized supply
- ☐ Deployer has no rug history
- ☐ Other wallets have sold successfully
- ☐ Position sized for a possible total loss
Reading the chart is step one. Getting pinged in real time is step two.
