How to read a DEX Screener chart
DEX Screener is where most memecoin traders read price, liquidity, and activity. Knowing which fields matter — and which are easy to fake — turns it from a wall of numbers into a decision tool.
Why this matters
Most bad trades start with misreading the chart: trusting volume, ignoring liquidity, or chasing a "trending" tag. Reading DEX Screener correctly is a foundational skill.
Step by step
- Start with liquidity, not price. Find the liquidity figure first. It tells you how much real depth backs the token and how badly your size will slip. A big market cap on thin liquidity is mostly paper.
- Compare volume to makers. Look at volume next to the makers (unique traders) count. High volume with few makers is wash trading. Rising makers = real, broadening participation.
- Read the transaction counts. Check buys vs. sells over 5m/1h. A healthy move shows more buyers than sellers and growing transaction counts, not a single wallet churning.
- Note the pair age. Very new pairs carry the highest rug and snipe risk. Pair age plus liquidity status (locked/burned) frames how dangerous the entry is.
- Ignore boosts and ads. Paid boosts and ad slots say nothing about safety. Trending placement can be bought with wash volume. Treat both as marketing, not validation.
- Cross-check on an explorer. For anything you might actually buy, confirm authorities and holder concentration on Solscan. DEX Screener shows activity; the explorer shows control.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Anchoring on price and market cap while ignoring liquidity.
- Treating high volume as demand without checking makers.
- Believing a "boosted" or trending token is vetted.
- Skipping the explorer check on authorities and holders.
- Trading the lowest timeframe noise on a thin pool.
Quick checklist
- ☐ Liquidity depth read first
- ☐ Volume sanity-checked against makers
- ☐ Buy/sell counts reviewed
- ☐ Pair age and LP status noted
