How rug pulls work and how to avoid them
Rug pulls are the defining risk of memecoin trading and the number-one source of avoidable losses. The good news is that they are not magic — they rely on a small set of structural setups, and you can screen for those setups in under a minute. This explainer breaks down how rugs work and how to systematically avoid them.
What a rug pull actually is
A rug pull is when the people behind a token collapse its price to near zero by removing liquidity or dumping their holdings, leaving other holders unable to sell at any meaningful price. The term comes from "pulling the rug out" — the support vanishes in an instant.
Hard rugs vs soft rugs
- Hard rug: liquidity is pulled (or the team dumps) in a single transaction. The chart goes vertically down to a flatline.
- Soft rug: a slow abandonment — the team quietly sells, stops developing, and lets the coin bleed out over days or weeks.
Hard rugs are sudden and obvious; soft rugs are insidious and trap hopeful holders who keep waiting for a bounce that never comes.
The setups that enable rugs
- Unlocked, dev-held liquidity — the single biggest enabler; it can be pulled in one transaction.
- Live mint authority — the team can print supply and dump it.
- Live freeze authority — can be used to block your sells (honeypot territory).
- Concentrated supply — a few wallets, or funded sister wallets, holding enough to crater the price.
The pre-buy screen that stops most rugs
- Verify the LP is locked or burned — check the duration and amount on-chain, not a badge.
- Confirm mint authority is renounced.
- Confirm freeze authority is renounced.
- Check top-holder concentration, excluding LP and burn wallets.
- Trace the deployer's funding and history for past rugs.
- Confirm ordinary wallets have sold successfully.
Spotting a rug in progress
Even after a clean screen, watch for the live signature of a rug: a sudden drop in pool depth (liquidity draining), the dev wallet routing tokens to fresh wallets that immediately sell, and price collapsing as depth falls. If you see liquidity leaving, exit first and analyze later.
Why sizing is your last defense
No screen is perfect — novel scams slip through. That is why you size every memecoin position as if it could go to zero. Good sizing means that even when a rug beats your checks, the loss is small and survivable rather than catastrophic.
