How to size a memecoin position

Position sizing — not picking winners — is what keeps you in the game. With memecoins, correct sizing starts from the assumption that any single coin can go to zero.

Why this matters

You will be wrong often in memecoins. Sizing decides whether being wrong costs you a small, recoverable amount or ends your run. It is the core of survival.

Step by step

  1. Pick a risk-per-trade rule. Decide a small fixed fraction of your account to risk per trade (many traders use 1–3%). This caps the damage from any single zero.
  2. Account for total loss. For memecoins, assume the realistic downside is −100%. Size so that this outcome is annoying, not account-ending.
  3. Match size to pool depth. Keep your trade a small fraction of pool liquidity (e.g. well under 1%) so your own price impact does not wreck your entry and exit.
  4. Scale with conviction, within limits. A cleaner setup can justify the upper end of your size range — but never blow past your cap because something "feels" certain. Nothing here is.
  5. Cap correlated exposure. Several coins in the same narrative move together. Limit total exposure to a meta so one narrative collapse does not hit your whole book.
  6. Keep a fee buffer. Always retain enough SOL for priority fees and exits. Running dry means you cannot sell when you need to.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Going "all in" on a single high-conviction coin.
  • Sizing as if a −100% outcome is impossible.
  • Trading a size that is a large fraction of the pool.
  • Stacking many coins of the same narrative without an exposure cap.
  • Leaving no SOL for fees and getting stuck unable to exit.

Quick checklist

  • Fixed risk-per-trade rule set
  • Sized to survive a −100% outcome
  • Trade size small vs pool depth
  • Conviction scaling within a hard cap
  • Correlated/narrative exposure limited
  • SOL fee buffer retained
