How the memecoin lifecycle works from launch to death
Most memecoins, whatever their meme, follow a recognizable lifecycle from launch to death. Learning the stages — and where the opportunity and the danger sit in each — lets you locate any coin on its arc and act accordingly instead of reacting blindly.
Stage 1 — Launch
A coin goes live, usually on a bonding curve (pump.fun) or a fresh DEX pool. Liquidity is minimal or curve-based, and the risk is maximal: no track record, possible scam, and bots circling. This is the highest-variance moment.
Stage 2 — Sniping and early concentration
In the first blocks, snipe bots and bundlers grab the cheapest supply. Early holdings concentrate, often in a few coordinated hands. The first price action is largely these actors positioning — and soon, taking profit.
Stage 3 — The pump
If a catalyst or narrative catches, unique buyers broaden and price rises. Early in this stage is where genuine opportunity lives — real demand on (usually) reasonable prices. Late in it, the move goes parabolic and FOMO peaks.
Stage 4 — Distribution
At the top, insiders and snipers distribute into the euphoria. You can often see it: dev/whale wallets sending to fresh sellers, unique-buyer growth stalling while volume stays high. The smart supply is exiting into the late buyers.
Stage 5 — Decline or death
With buying exhausted and insiders out, the coin rolls over. Some bleed slowly (a soft rug or fading attention); some collapse outright (a liquidity pull). The vast majority never recover — most memecoins end here, at or near zero.
Where to act in the lifecycle
- Launch: screen hard, size tiny, or skip — maximum risk.
- Early pump: the best risk/reward, on confirmed broadening demand.
- Parabola/distribution: take profit; do not chase or add.
- Decline: exit on the first signs; do not average into death.
Reading the chart is step one. Getting pinged in real time is step two.
