How to avoid memecoin scams

Why this matters

Scammers industrialize the same tricks. Pattern recognition — plus a hard rule never to sign what you cannot verify — neutralizes the majority of them.

Step by step

1. Never sign unverified transactions. The single biggest defense: do not approve a transaction or connect your wallet to "claim", "migrate", or "verify" anything you did not initiate and cannot verify on-chain.
2. Recognize honeypots. A chart that only goes up with no successful sells from normal wallets is a honeypot or extreme sell tax. Confirm others can sell before buying.
3. Distrust surprise airdrops. Unexpected tokens with a "claim" site are almost always drainers. Never interact with a claim page for an airdrop you did not earn.
4. Verify links and handles. Impersonation is rampant — fake bots, fake support, fake official accounts. Reach tools and projects through verified, bookmarked links only.
5. Treat unsolicited DMs as hostile. No legitimate project or admin DMs you first to help. Assume any unsolicited "support" or "opportunity" DM is a scam.
6. Use a burner wallet. Trade memecoins from a separate, low-balance burner wallet. Even if you slip up, the damage is capped at the burner's balance.

Common mistakes to avoid

• Signing a transaction to "claim" or "migrate" without verifying it.
• Buying a token where only the deployer has ever sold.
• Clicking airdrop claim links from unknown sources.
• Trusting DMs from "support" or "admins".
